Baby Boomer Credits Home And Family
I have noticed that my baby boomer siblings and friends share a certain outlook on life. We have all lived long enough to appreciate that we do not live our lives on mountain peaks. What does that mean? It means that we have been alive long enough to understand that everything will not always be going our way.
Life will present challenges at work and at home. Sometimes we are on top of everything that comes our way. Sometimes it seems like nothing else can go wrong. When we hit those points we have enough experience to realize that it is temporary. We will rebound. We will be back up on top again.
We climb the mountain with growing anticipation at reaching the summit. We arrive to be thrilled by our sense of accomplishment and the view. The world lays at our feet. We can do anything. Then we start to hike down. Into the shadows that fill the valley below and back to our routines.
One week it was my new convection oven and black decker food processor that topped my chart. The next week I would prowl the big box stores in search of the perfect home storage solutions. These were part of our normal life. These small things were big in our house and we could not wait to share and show off.
Caught up in the moment these small issues can dominate our day. We are the generation that did not want to wait decades for a new furniture set or dishwasher. We wanted a home like our parents and to fill it with nice furniture and appliances. We were willing to use credit instead of saving. It took us some years to realize what is truly important is in our home and family.
We did not wait to purchase a recreational vehicle at retirement age. We wanted one now and imagined our wonderful vacation adventures. We only used it twice and sold it. We used the money to fly the entire tribe to several fantastic spots. We collected our memories and stories that we will share forever.
Our generation started with the homes that had more room than we needed. We drove vehicles we wanted for the wrong reasons. We began to have families and suddenly we started to understand what was significant in our lives. Raising children together is what makes those rooms and that yard a home. Fill every room with love and you will lower your expectations and raise your hopes.
