Given the fact a kids playhouse is meant to be a structure that is, at least in part, devoted to embracing and fostering your child’s playful side, it also offers a chance for your child to really show off his or her cultural roots to its many visitors. When a child is presented with a playhouse, parents will almost always want him or her to do something to make the playhouse feel more like they own it. Whether they do it by adding their toys to the space or by laying out their favorite blanket in the loft, parents want to know that their child is comfortable and feels responsible for the structure. Expressing their cultural side is one way that kids can do this. Several suggestions are as follows :

1. A child can be inspired to create a mural based on their culture and traditions. Whether inside of the kids playhouse or on the outer walls, that blank space should be considered fair game for your child.   A cultural or heritage mural could be based on significant historical figures, plants and animals specific to the country or origin, or flags from each of the countries that are in the geneology of the child.

2. Create curtains for the playhouse from fabric reflecting your child’s cultural heritage.   Many regions in the world are identified by traditional symbols, patterns, designs, colors or outfits.  Floral patterns on the clothing of women in Latin cultures, for example, tell of a family’s region of origin.

3. Have your child develop a musical library that they can play in the playhouse or that they can share with others.   Finding cultural music on either the internet or at the library can be fun when making a musical library.  Preparing the musical library can be done using software or with an mp3 player and small speakers.

Children that make their kids playhouse a major part of their lives will cherish the opportunity to give it a really rich cultural feel. Parents should encourage this type of exploration and pride. As your child plays in their playhouse, they may start to inquire and play games from your family’s homeland. This will be invaluable in years to come as your child takes ownership of passing down your family and culture’s traditions.
