Opening credits in a kids playhouse is only the start of your child’s first major motion cinematic creation. Your child can use a regular video camera, along with the various areas of their playhouse, to make his or her own movie! It can be a very fun and extremely rewarding project that your child will remember throughout life. Here are a few tips for bringing Hollywood to your very own backyard:

1. Develop a story. Nothing can be more inspiring to your child than their kids playhouse and the fond times playing in it. Your child will enjoy writing and creating their first movie using it as a point of inspiration. Making a movie is a wonderful opportunity for a child’s voice to be heard, whether your child opts to make a comedy featuring their dolls doing silly dances on the window sill of the playhouse or whether it’s an action movie with cops and robbers using the playhouse as a bank.

2. For scenery, your child can use blankets, recycled items from the house, long pieces of fabric, or painted poster board. The outside of a kids playhouse can be designed to be wild jungles or garden adventures. A cool movie backdrop can be created easily and without too much effort.

3. Encourage them to use all types of items as characters. Who says a male character always has to be “human”? Vegetables such as a stalk of broccoli, ala Veggie Tales, or a can of pasta rings can be used as characters in their movie. Allow your child’s imagination to not be limited and encourage your child to realize their own, unique vision while making this movie…so, anything can go!

4. In a kids playhouse, special effects can be easy to do. From free-falling toys from the roof to things that appear and disappear from sight in the windows, there are so many different no-cost special effects that your kids can make happen with a little ingenuity.

5. Tell them that they can be a part of the movie also! The script can be written without rules. It’s the excitement that comes with exploring their environment to see things from a different perspective that will help to give their movie more authenticity and make it more fun to create! If your child, their friends, and even older adults are a part of their cinematic experience, there is sure to be many wonderful scenes that will unfold!

Anything is possible when a child directs a kids playhouse production. Be sure that your child is equipped with adequate recording equipment, even if you have to be the one that holds the camera. One more thing, try to let others know about and view the movie. Consider posting on your family’s website or on a social networking site for other friends and family to see it.
