Going on a camping trip for the first time can be both exciting and a little daunting to a child. Parents worry that the child will become afraid of night noises or not be able to fall asleep in an unusual environment. Because of these concerns, many parents opt for a test run by bundling up the kids for a night in a tent in the backyard. You give your children the opportunity to experience a night out in nature, yet still have the ability to tuck them into their own familiar bed should the need arise.

And don’t forget the campfire! Camping simply isn’t camping without the experience of cooking, singing, and spinning tales around a roaring fire. Fortunately, families who embark on a backyard camping adventure don’t have to forgo the pleasure of a campfire. Just by purchasing a basic fire pit, your family can enjoy the magical experience of a campfire in the safety of their own backyard.

Naturally, anyone that has small children should make sure that they are careful with the pit. Make sure to choose a model that doesn’t have any tripping hazards or sharp edges that could injure a small child. It is also a good idea to look for a pit that comes with a screen or other type of covering just in case. With due caution, families can enjoy the beauty of a pit fire without placing their children in harm’s way.

Even though you are in your own backyard, it’s important to recreate the whole campfire experience as much as you can. You can bring in a few lawn chairs or some benches so that people have a place to sit. It can be fun for parents to entertain their children with a few silly stories – or ghost stories for an older teen crowd. If anyone plays an instrument this is the time; guitars are welcome at any camp out. A singalong around a pit fire is likely to become a cherished family tradition.

Almost everyone, and especially the kids, will enjoy making food around the pit. Roasted hot dogs, toasted marshmallows – they are definitely kid-friendly foods. You can use some nice long sticks from the yard or use untied coat hangers to make great things to roads with. Always make sure that the children do not stray too close to the fire when they are cooking their food. And don’t forget the necessary side items: buns, relish and condiments for the weiners; graham crackers and chocolate for the marshmallows. Adults can make coco over the fire pit with a camp kettle or all metal pan.

For a user-friendly camping experience, families can’t beat camping in the backyard with a crackling fire in the outdoor firepit. You will be sure to create memories that you will cherish for the rest of your life.
